Cyprus- Recent History
In 1974, Turkish forces occupied Cyprus. As a result a compromise was reached, which led to the partitioning of Cyprus.
The Southern Republic of Cyprus is influenced by Greek language, culture, and religion. The North is similarly influenced by the Turkish language, culture, and religion.
Until recently, travel between the two sections was a relatively lengthy affair, which involved much red tape. However, in more recent times, the fact hat the Southern Republic is now a EU member, and the general reduction in tension between the two sides, crossing the border is now much easier. No longer do tourists visit one half or the other. They can now include the North and the South in the same itiniery.
