The Fat Soluble Vitamins

The fat soluble vitamins are vitamins A, E, D, and K. They have many important functions in our bodies.

Vitamin A is important for good eye and immune health. A deficiency in vitamin A over time can lead to night blindness, and then full blindness. However, too much shouldn’t be taken either, as it can build up in the body and cause toxicity. Pregnant women have to be particularly careful not to have too much vitamin A as it can lead to birth defects.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant vitamin, and as such has received quite a bit of press in recent years. Not enough can lead to gastrointestinal problems, wasting o0f muscles, circulation problems, and cardiovascular diseases.

Vitamin D is important for our bone health, which is why most good calcium supplements include this vitamin in their formulas. We can make our own vitamin D, but need to get a few hours of sunlight each week. The sun must touch our skin, and we cannot be wearing full strength sunscreen when we are outside if we want to make vitamin D. Insufficient vitamin D can also lead to diarrhea, insomnia, and low blood calcium levels.

Vitamin K is very important in blood clotting and bone health. It is another that is usually included in good quality calcium supplements.
